Agnipath Protest: Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) held separate meetings with the chiefs of the three wings of the army. In this meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence, discussions were held regarding the Agnipath scheme. There was a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pandey, Chief of Navy Admiral R Hari Kumar and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary.

First of all, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar reached the PM residence. After the meeting with the Navy Chief was over, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary met and lastly the Prime Minister met Army Chief Jan Manoj Pandey. One after the other meetings were held according to seniority. Admiral R Hari Kumar is the senior most among the three army chiefs. General Pandey is at number three. Prime Minister Modi met the three army chiefs separately for 30 minutes.

The Agneepath Military Recruitment Scheme was announced on June 14 after which violent protests have erupted in different parts of the country. Protesters set fire to many trains and buses in the past.

Before the meeting of PM Modi, the three parts of the Army, ie, the Army, Air Force and Navy, once again held a joint press conference regarding the Agneepath scheme and the recruitment process of Agniveers. During this, the officer said that the army is not for the job but for the passion and emotion.

Amid apprehensions about the recruitment process, Additional Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, Lt Gen Anil Puri said the recruitment process would remain unchanged and the traditional regimental system would continue in the Army.

In a press conference of the three wings of the Army, Puri said that the Agnipath scheme is the result of long-term consultations within the three services and the Defense Ministry, besides consultations between several departments of the government. He said that this is a much needed reform.
