Commonwealth Games 2022: Lakshya Sen won his maiden singles title by defeating Malaysia’s Tje Yong Ng 2-1 in the Commonwealth Games badminton competitions on Monday. After losing the first game 19-21, the 20-year-old Indian shuttler fought to win the second 21-9 and then secured a memorable victory in the third, beating Tje Yong Ng’s challenger 21-18.

In his first Commonwealth Games, Sen combined the gold medal with the silver he won in the mixed team event. This was the first time that India had claimed both the men’s singles and women’s singles titles in the same Commonwealth Games season. He also became the fourth Indian after Prakash Padukone, Syed Modi and Parupalli Kashyap to win the men’s singles title at the Commonwealth Games.

This is India’s ninth gold medal in badminton at the Commonwealth Games after seven individually and one in the mixed team event. Saina Nehwal is the only player to have won two singles titles. For a while, it looked like Sen would not make it to the list after losing the first game, as the Malaysian star won the last four points in a row.

The turning point of the match was the second set when Lakshya took an early lead. He won 11 points in a row, which allowed him to move the Malaysian around and control the tempo of the match. He played aggressively and avoided making many mistakes. The Malaysian player’s game also went down a notch and he made some mistakes.

Sen said, “The second game of the match was the turning point where I took the lead. I was playing well and a little patience. It gave me a lot of confidence throughout the third game.” After winning the second set, Sen took control of the third game as well. They took a three-point lead and dominated the match. “I am very happy that I played the second and third games well,” Sen said after the match.

Sen said he was happy to win his maiden singles gold at the Commonwealth Games. “It’s like a dream come true, and I’m happy with the way I played today. Credit to the Malaysian player as well, because he played the game really well,” Sen said.

With this gold, Sen continued his most successful year on the circuit, winning the India Open in January, his first Super 500 title. At the German Open, Sen lost in the final after defeating world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in the semi-finals. He reached the final of the All-England Championship in which he lost to Viktor Axelsen. He was also a part of the Indian team that won the Thomas Cup.
