Sudhir Para Powerlifter: India got the gold medal in Para-Powerlifting on Thursday in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The medal was won by 27-year-old Sudhir in the men’s heavyweight category. He lifted 212 kg and won gold with a record 134.5 points. This was India’s first gold medal in para powerlifting event in the history of Commonwealth Games.
Sudhir, who created this history in the Commonwealth Games, became a victim of polio in his childhood. Polio made him handicapped at the age of just 5 years. Some years passed like this but later he started powerlifting to keep himself fit. This game gave him courage and gradually this game became a new life for him.
National champion for seven consecutive years
Sudhir started powerlifting at the age of 18. And in just three years of hard work, he became the national champion in this event. In the year 2016, he won gold at the national level. After this Sudhir never looked back. He kept registering his name in big tournaments one after the other. Sudhir has been winning gold in powerlifting at the nationals for the last seven consecutive years.
Has also won the title of ‘Strong Man of India’
Born in a farmer family in Sonepat, Haryana, Sudhir has brought medals at the international level even before the Commonwealth Games. He won the bronze medal in the Asian Para Games held in 2019. After this, in the year 2021, he also won a bronze medal in the Asia-Oceania Open Powerlifting Championships in South Korea. Sudhir has also won the title of ‘Strong Man of India’ twice.
