Tribal Vote Bank: After the BJP-AAP in the Gujarat Assembly elections, now the Congress has also entered the fray to strengthen the vote bank of the tribals. In an effort to bring back its traditional vote bank, Congress is going to start the Adivasi Satyagraha Conference from today. Under the leadership of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Congress is starting a program called Adivasi Satyagraha Conference in Gujarat for the next 6 months from today. This program, which runs on the tribal belt from Umargaon to Ambaji, is going to start from Dahod. From the inception of Gujarat till 2001, the flag of Congress was waving on this belt. But after 2001, BJP has also kept its roots in the tribal vote bank.

Not only Congress-BJP, AAP’s eyes are also on tribal voters

The Gujarat Assembly elections are due by the end of this year. After winning in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party is going to contest the majority of the seats in Gujarat for the first time, so naturally it is going to be a triangular battle for the first time. Narendra Modi has done a program among the tribals in Dahod on 20 April. Not only this, PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development works worth more than 21 thousand crores in this area. So, on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party, which is trying to establish its roots in Gujarat, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a big rally in Chanderia of Bharuch in the tribal belt on May 1. At the same time, by sharing the stage with Indian Tribal Party chief Chhotubhai Vasava, an alliance with AAP was announced. Chhotu Vasava and his son Mahesh Vasava occupy two tribal reserved meetings in Bharuch district. Naturally, by tying up with AAP, it took the first step of attracting its tribal voters towards itself.

What is the importance of tribal vote bank in Gujarat

In the 182-seat assembly, 27 seats are reserved for tribals. Before the year 2002, be it the Vidhan Sabha or the Lok Sabha, tribals traditionally used to be the vote bank of the Congress. Congress also used to start campaigning from this tribal areas at the time of every election. After the entry of Narendra Modi in 2001, BJP made a big change in this vote bank of Congress. In the name of Van Bandhu Yojana, the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi did many development works in the tribal area, due to which this vote bank gradually started slipping from the hands of Congress. However, in the 2017 assembly elections, the Congress got 17 seats from this area. But two Congress MLAs who won 17 seats have resigned and joined BJP. At the same time, Congress’s tribal MLA Anil Joshiara passed away.

In order to get the majority of seats on the tribal belt, in 2020, BJP made a Congress MLA named Jitu Chaudhary by giving him a ticket and not only made him an MLA, but also made him a minister in the Bhupendra Patel government. Ashwin Kotwal, who won three consecutive elections from Khedbrahma seat of Sabarkantha, recently resigned as MLA and joined BJP after leaving Congress. In Gujarat, on the basis of population, 14 percent of the total voters are tribals.

Even today, there is a big issue regarding water, education, health and employment in tribal areas in Gujarat, which is considered developed. At the same time, forest and land have been the issue of every election in the tribal area.
