AbujaThe first case of death from monkeypox has been confirmed in Nigeria this year. The Disease Control Agency gave this information. Nigeria’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Sunday that 21 cases of monkeypox were confirmed this year out of 66 suspected cases. It is a local-level epidemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa. The CDC said a 40-year-old patient with multiple diseases and a weakened immune system had died.

The disease did not spread on a large scale since September 2017
The disease has not spread on a large scale in Nigeria since September 2017 but some cases have been coming. The CDC said that since 2017 at least 247 cases have been confirmed in 22 of the 36 states, with a mortality rate of 3.6 percent.

The increase in cases of monkeypox in Europe and America has raised concerns even in countries that have not reported any cases in recent years. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that there have been about 200 cases of this disease in more than 20 countries. Never before had there been so many cases of monkeypox outside Africa.

This infection occurred in a person who went from Nigeria to UK
Monkeypox infection was confirmed on 4 May in a person who went from Nigeria to Britain. Six cases of the disease were confirmed in Nigeria after the British national left the country.

CDC chief Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa said that no such evidence has been found that a British citizen was infected in Nigeria. He said that Nigeria is always ready to deal with the outbreak of monkeypox.
