Gujarat Liquor News: The death toll in the Botad-Ahmedabad liquor tragedy has gone up to 41. Opposition parties demanded the resignation of state Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, alleging that the ruling BJP has failed to strictly implement the Prohibition Act. Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Gujarat president Gopal Italia visited Rozid village in Botad, where 11 people had died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor. Italia met the families of the deceased and also staged a sit-in outside the BJP district office in Botad, demanding the resignation of Sanghvi.

Italia said, “The people of Barwala taluka told me that any honest police officer posted here would be transferred soon. How will the common man feel safe when the people in power start weakening the law and order for their own benefit? It is said that despite prohibition in Gujarat, liquor worth Rs 10,000 crore is sold every year. Where is all this money going?”

I invite Gujarat’s ‘Super CM’ CR Patil to visit these villages where liquor is being brought in tankers. Meanwhile, Youth Congress workers burnt Sanghvi’s effigy in Ahmedabad, demanding his immediate resignation. Members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) protested outside Gujarat University. Later on Wednesday evening, a delegation of Congress leaders led by Leader of Opposition Sukhram Rathwa also met Governor Acharya Devvrat and submitted a memorandum demanding justice for the poison tragedy victims.

Gujarat Congress working president Jignesh Mevani also took to Twitter to criticize the state government and attributed the deaths to “chemical poisoning”. “Those who are describing the tragedy of this poisonous liquor as an incident of chemical poisoning are insulting the families of the deceased. They think that the people of Gujarat are fools,” Mevani said.
