On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry ordered to shoot any rioter. At the same time, the market of rumors and fake news against India is hot in Sri Lanka. Sometimes rumors and news are being run about the Rajapaksa family taking refuge in India and sometimes the arrival of the Indian Army.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo today once again rubbished reports about sending troops to Sri Lanka. The High Commission said that we deny the reports of speculation in some news media and social media about sending India’s soldiers to Sri Lanka. Such reports and views are not at all in line with India’s official stand. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has made it clear that India is a supporter of democracy, its prosperity and stability in Sri Lanka. Earlier, the Government of India had also denied the news about the Rajapakse family taking refuge and termed them as fake news.

On the other hand, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka on Tuesday also termed as “fake and absolutely wrong” reports on permanent social media, in which former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members have been speculated to have fled to India.

Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister on Monday amid intensifying anti-government protests in Sri Lanka due to the severe economic crisis. Since the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday, speculations are rife about his whereabouts. There have been reports that Mahinda Rajapaksa had left his office-cum-official residence ‘Temple Trees’ on Tuesday morning.

Violence erupted in Sri Lanka on Monday after supporters of then-prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked anti-government protesters demanding his removal over the dire economic crisis in the country, killing eight people. At the same time, more than 250 people have been injured in the violence in Colombo and other cities.
