T Raja Singh Arrested: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader T Raja Singh was once again arrested today by Hyderabad Police for making controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. He was arrested by the police on 23 August amid heavy protests. However, he got bail from the court on the same day. After this the demonstrations intensified. The protesters were demanding his arrest.
On August 23, the BJP also suspended Raja Singh from the party and issued a notice seeking an answer as to why he should not be expelled. Raja Singh, an MLA from Hyderabad’s Goshamahal assembly constituency, is known for his hardline religious rhetoric and remains in the headlines for this reason.
When did the controversy start?
The BJP MLA had released a video on Monday criticizing stand-up comedian Munawwar Farooqui and a particular religion. In the video, Raja Singh is purportedly seen making some remarks against a particular religion. Farooqui recently performed at an event in the city.
Massive demonstrations started only after Singh’s statement. Additional police force was deployed in some parts of the city on Wednesday. Telangana Home Minister Mahmood Ali said the government would not compromise on law and order issues and would not tolerate people hurting the sentiments of other religions and action would be taken as per law.
Ali said, “There are many complaints against Raja Singh all over the state that he has made derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammad. He was arrested on Tuesday.” Appealing to the people to maintain peace, he said that no one should take the law into their own hands.
