Flood In North Eastern States: In Assam, the flood situation...

Flood In North Eastern States: In Assam, the flood situation in the Brahmaputra, Barak and its tributaries remains critical. So far 82 people have lost their lives due to this natural calamity in the state and about 45 lakh people have been affected. In the last 24 hours, 11 people died due to floods in Assam, while seven people are said to be missing. During this, ABP News himself reached the ground to take stock of the flood affected areas.

During this, our reporter Manogya Loiwal spoke to a 50-year-old woman, Savita Kumari Das, in the flood-affected area. These days, he has to fill his stomach in front of his submerged house with the relief material received from the government. He said that my house is filled with water till the neck. Mattress, pillow and everything else has got wet. I am getting bread for 2 times from the ration given by the government. Yesterday he went to bed hungry. It is hurting a lot, how can I describe this pain? The government is giving us a little ration, we are going to drink food from it, everything else is wasted.

have to sleep hungry
Another victim of flood told that I see my house everyday. In front is my house, the house has been flooded and its first floor is submerged. I have been spending time under a tarpaulin on the road since 4 days. I eat whatever I get from the government because now there is nothing left in the house.

flood victims are not getting relief material
While expressing her pain regarding relief material, another victim said that leaders come and leaders go, but whatever they give to us in the name of relief, our work does not work. Sometimes salt is available and sometimes rice is not available. Sometimes dal is available, oil is not available. The tarpaulin which is given to us explodes when strong wind blows. Many people have not even got this. Leaders go by only counting. For them we are just figures.

There is also a shortage of drinking water during the flood
Some people are also selling relief material. They are getting this relief material for free, which we have to buy by paying money. In some places, even the government is not aware that relief material is being sent. The affected people said that our government is requested to give us drinking water. Provide toilet The water here is so dirty that it has become the home of disease. We are not able to drink water or go to the toilet, so just imagine what will be the condition of women in our area?

people living on national highway
Floods have made the situation critical at many places in Assam that people are being forced to live on National Highways and Roads. In Kamrup district, people are living in temporary tents on the flood-affected National Highway. Because here the only national highway is left from the water.

All the surrounding villages and areas have been submerged in water. They are being given food and water for two times by the government. These people are forced to live a bad life here with their cattle. Today I have to stay here even in the midst of rain for four days. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has said that it is mandatory to provide relief material to those who are not in the relief camp. This is a big challenge. The difficulty is that there are no roads in many areas, so we have to depend on the army. There are many such areas which are still submerged to deliver relief material.

Indian Army is engaged in relief and rescue
The flood situation still remains grim in Assam where more than 42 lakh people and more than 32 districts are in the grip of floods. Along with NDRF, the Indian Army is also engaged in relief and rescue work. State government’s SDRF and ASDMA are also continuously working at the ground level. Many columns of the Army are engaged in relief and rescue work. In the last several days, more than 5000 people have been rescued by the army. Army personnel are engaged in evacuating the people trapped in the flood through boats.

What are the victims trapped in the flood saying?
Many people have taken shelter in a hospital during the floods. First of all, children, old people and women were rescued. One of the victims, Rokaiya Bibi, said that we have been here for the last four days. There is nothing to eat or live in so much poverty and in so much trouble that even tears are not stopping, my house has been washed away, so I have to stay in the hospital. Another victim, Shanta, told that her cow, calf and her two goats have been washed away. We are ruined. We have nothing left. We are also finding it difficult to stay in the hospital.

Food being transported in stretcher
Shoma says that I am sitting on the hospital bed because there is nothing left in my house now. I have to live here with my young child. There is a lot of trouble. The child has nothing left to eat. From above this flood is the house of disease. Sometimes we have nothing to feed the mosquitoes and sometimes the dirty children. The stretcher is being used to deliver food and relief material in the hospital. There is only miles of water in this area, whose depth ranges from 10 feet to somewhere between 25 to 30 feet.

Medicines are not available in hospitals
There were also many children in the hospital who got hurt but for them tetanus and other medicines are not available in this hospital. Because of which the children were rescued and taken in a boat to the medical camp where they were given other medicines and injections. The present situation in Assam is pathetic and worrying. Now the flood water will not decrease but the rain will increase. Whatever the figures may say, but amidst the government’s promises and claims, the question arises as to why Assam gets submerged in a little rain.
