Indian Boxers at CWG 2022: India’s Lovelina Borgohain, who is being said to be a sure medal contender in the Commonwealth Games 2022, will have to return to the country empty-handed. She was eliminated after losing the quarter-final match on the sixth day of the Commonwealth Games. However, three other Indian boxers won their respective quarterfinal matches to ensure medals. Nikhat Zareen, Neetu Ghanghas and Mohammad Hussamuddin have reached the semi-finals in their respective weight categories.

Lovlina’s defeat disappointed
In the women’s 66-70kg weight category, Olympic medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain was up against Rosie Ackles of Wales. In this quarter-final match, Lovlina had a marginal lead in the first two rounds but fell behind in the last round. Out of the 5 judges, two decided in favor of Lovlina while three said that Rosie Ackles had the upper hand. In this way, Lovlina had to lose this match 3-2.

Nikhat Zareen’s one-sided victory
World champion Nikhat Zareen confirmed her medal by defeating Helen Jones of Wales 5-0 in the women’s 50kg quarterfinals. Nikhat had the upper hand in all three rounds. He did not give any chance to his opponent to be aggressive.

Neetu Ganghas won the match in only two rounds
The 21-year-old Neetu disappointed her rival Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the opening two rounds of the women’s 48kg quarterfinals. After this, in the third and final round, Nicole decided to voluntarily retire and Neetu’s medal and semi-final place was confirmed.

Husamuddin won the thrilling match
Husamuddin, 28, from Nizamabad advanced to the last four in the men’s 57kg category with a 4-1 win over Namibia’s Tryagen Morning Ndevello. Husamuddin got a tough fight from his opponent in all three rounds but he kept taking a slight lead every time. After the last round, four judges decided in his favor in the total points and India’s medal was confirmed.
