Bharat Jodo Yatra: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday (September 27) dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to the state government and the police to ensure that there is no traffic jam on the road during the India Jodo Yatra.
A bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P Chali dismissed the PIL after the Kerala government said the padyatra was going on in a peaceful manner and action was taken where any illegal activity was found.
Taking into account the submissions of the state, the court said that the petitioners are unable to prove their allegation that the yatra is causing traffic jams. The Kerala government also told the bench that the police have directed the organizers of the Bharat Jodo Yatra to ensure that it is conducted in a peaceful manner.
The petition, filed by advocate Vijayan, had said that the yatra led by Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi should be taken only half the road and the rest of the road should be left for free movement of vehicles.

Apart from the regulation of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a PIL was also requested to direct the Congress to recover the expenses incurred in the deployment of heavy police force on the Yatra route. The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ of the Congress began on September 7 from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The journey will end in Kashmir covering a distance of 3,570 km in 150 days.
In this, Congress, Rahul Gandhi, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly VD Satheshan were also made parties. It alleged that the three Congress leaders had “no respect for the law made by the central and state governments and the law laid down by the court”.
