Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project: National High Speed Railway Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has issued tenders for the construction of a 21 kilometer long tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. Seven kilometers of the tunnel will pass under the sea. This is one of the ambitious schemes of the government. Regarding its construction, the government has now once again issued tenders for it under the new scheme.
Sources said that after the change of government in Maharashtra, the work on the corridor has intensified. Tenders invited earlier were withdrawn. These are being updated again. The tunnel will be constructed between the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Thane district of Maharashtra and the underground station at Shilphata.
The country’s first such tunnel will be
According to the documents attached to the tender, the tunnel will be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and ‘New Austrian Tunneling Method’ (NTM). The seven kilometer long tunnel under the sea will be the first tunnel to be built under the sea in the country.
Tunnel will be 25 to 65 meters deep
According to NHSRCL, the tunnel will be a ‘single-tube twin-track’ with a diameter of 13.1 metres. The section will involve construction of 39 instrument rooms at 37 locations adjacent to the tunnel location. Three TBMs will be used to build the tunnel portion of about 16 km and the remaining five km will be constructed through NATM. This tunnel will be about 25 to 65 meters deep below the ground and the deepest construction site will be 114 meters below Parsik hill near Shilphata.
It is worth noting that NHSRCL had floated tenders for the underground tunnel construction works for the project in November last year, but this year it was canceled by the authorities citing administrative reasons. Sources said that land acquisition for projects in Maharashtra, including the Bandra-Kurla complex, has been a major issue in the previous government.
