Presidential Election 2022: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday nominated former Jharkhand governor and tribal leader Draupadi Murmu as its candidate for the Presidential post against opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha for the July 18 elections. After the completion of her term, she left for Jharkhand Raj Bhavan from her village in Rairangpur district of Odisha on July 12, 2021 and has been living there since then. Political journey in 1997
Born on June 20, 1958 in Odisha in a simple Santhal tribal family, Daupadi Murmu started her political career in 1997. She was elected councilor of the district board in Rairangpur in 1997. Before joining politics, she worked as Honorary Assistant Teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research, Rairangpur and as Junior Assistant in Irrigation Department. She has been a two-time MLA in Odisha and also got an opportunity to serve as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik government, when the BJP was in alliance with the Biju Janata Dal.
