Supreme Court: AG, serving a life sentence for the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. I firmly believe that there is no need for capital punishment, Perarivalan said after the Supreme Court ordered his release on Wednesday. Perarivalan was earlier sentenced to death by a special court in Chennai, which was later commuted to life imprisonment. Perarivalan said he wanted to breathe the air of freedom before thinking about his future.
Perarivalan’s mother gets emotional

Give me some time He said that I clearly believe that there is no need for capital punishment. Not just for mercy, but many judges including the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court have said so and there are many examples. Everyone is human. Perarivalan’s mother Arputhammal got emotional, recalling her son’s 31-year battle, saying that many unknown people have supported us. I don’t know many people. I thank them all. Perarivalan later played ‘parai’, an ancient Tamil percussion instrument, in a clear gesture of celebrating his release.
CM Stalin welcomed the decision
Welcoming the Supreme Court’s decision, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said it may find a place in the justice-law-political-administrative history. Soon after the apex court’s verdict to release Perarivalan, relatives started arriving at his residence here. Perarivalan fed sweets to his mother Arputhammal during this time. He hugged his mother and sister and expressed his happiness. His father, Kuildasan, expressed happiness over the end of his son’s 30-year imprisonment.
Pro-Tamil organizations took to the streets
When asked by reporters about his future plans, including his son’s wedding, the father said the family would discuss it. Activists of pro-Tamil organizations took to the streets in many parts of the state to express their happiness over the Supreme Court’s decision. They raised slogans and condemned the alleged inaction of the state governor on the 2018 cabinet recommendation to release Perarivalan and six others, besides the alleged complacency of the Center in the matter.
All parties welcomed the decision
Others sentenced to life imprisonment in the said case include Murugan, Santhan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Jayachandran and Nalini. Several other leaders, including Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) founder Vaiko and Pattali Makkal Kauchi (PMK) leader S Ramadoss, welcomed Perarivalan’s release. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai said that the party accepts the decision of the High Court.
