Punjab News: Campaigning for the Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll in Punjab came to an end at 6 pm on Tuesday. This seat fell vacant after Bhagwant Mann resigned from the membership of the Lok Sabha after becoming the Chief Minister. Voting on this seat will be held on Thursday and there is a possibility of a multi-cornered contest. Chief Minister Mann had a roadshow with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday. He addressed several election meetings on the last day of campaigning. Returning Officer Jitendra Jorwal had earlier said that there are 15,69,240 eligible voters in the Lok Sabha constituency, including 8,30,056 males, 7,39,140 females and 44 transgenders. A total of 16 candidates are in the fray, of which 13 are men and three are women.
Voting will be held on June 23
Polling will be held on June 23 from 8 am to 6 pm and counting of votes will take place on June 26. This is the first major electoral battle for AAP after coming to power in Punjab earlier this year. The AAP has fielded the party’s Sangrur district in-charge Gurmel Singh, while the Congress has bet on former Dhuri MLA Dalveer Singh Goldie. The BJP has fielded former Barnala MLA Kewal Dhillon, who had joined the party on June 4. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann is also in the fray. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has given ticket to Kamaldeep Kaur, sister of Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted in the murder case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is investigating the matter thoroughly in collaboration with central agencies and five other states. The SAD has raised the issue of Sikh prisoners and demanded the release of all prisoners lodged in jails even after completion of life sentence. SAD chief Sukhbir Badal repeatedly said during the campaign, “We are fighting for ‘Bandi Singh’ (Sikh prisoners) and this is a fight for justice.”
