Maharashtra Politics: Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant on Sunday wondered whether the appropriate constitutional process was followed for the election of the new Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. ? At the same time, he said that the way the rebel faction of Shiv Sena is trying to replace the original party also raises questions.
Rahul Narvekar of the Bharatiya Janata Party was elected the Speaker of the House on the first day of the special session of the Legislative Assembly on Sunday. MLAs of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde faction (Shiv Sena) also voted in his support. Narvekar got 164 votes. He defeated Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi, who got 107 votes.
Is the Speaker’s election constitutional? – Shiv Sena MP
Shiv Sena’s chief spokesperson Sawant questioned that the dispute between 39 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs and 16 MLAs who remained with the parent party would be resolved only in the Supreme Court. The manner in which Eknath Shinde came to power (in alliance with the BJP) and the manner in which the speaker was elected, raises many questions on the legitimacy of it. Was the whole process done in accordance with the Constitution?
He said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena had even issued a whip (in which all party MLAs were asked to vote in favor of Salvi) but the rebel MLAs did not agree. He said that we have complained against him to the speaker.
The rebel faction of Shiv Sena also issued a whip
Commenting on the stand of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena MLAs, Sawant said this could be the first case in which the rebel MLAs are calling their faction the parent party. During the election of Speaker, both the factions of Shiv Sena had issued separate whips to the party MLAs asking them to vote in favor of their respective candidates.
