Sri Lanka Crisis: Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post on Monday in view of skyrocketing inflation and violent public protests in Sri Lanka. His move to save power fell on him and due to a mistake, the PM lost his chair. In fact, hundreds of PM supporters gathered at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, on Monday morning. In this meeting, the supporters wanted that the PM should not resign from his post in such a situation.

According to Reuters, but less than an hour later, some of the crowds who came out in support of the PM ransacked the city with iron rods and beat up anti-government protesters. In this, ruling party MP Amarkirti Athukorala shot and killed a young man and then shot himself. Earlier, Mahinda Rajapaksa had said that he is ready to make any sacrifice.

Trying to strengthen the position of PM

In such a situation, where it was believed that after this meeting, the position of the PM would be strengthened. At the same time, the meeting organized by the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) backfired and this meeting became the reason for the PM’s resignation. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned in view of the violence and the protests just before that.
