Sri Lanka Crisis: Troubled Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said on Wednesday that he would appoint a new prime minister and cabinet this week that would introduce constitutional reforms. Due to the serious economic crisis in the country, there are huge demonstrations against the government.

In his address to the nation, Gotabaya also said that after appointing a new prime minister and government, a constitutional amendment would be introduced to prepare the contents of the 19th amendment to the constitution, which would give more powers to Parliament.

What did President Gotabaya Rajapakse say?
Gotabaya said that I will appoint a youth cabinet in which there will be no member of the Rajapaksa family. He has started discussions with political parties to prevent the country from reaching a chaotic situation. The President said that the Prime Minister of the new government will be given a chance to present a new program and take the country forward.

There is no government in the country for the last two days after the resignation of the President’s elder brother and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. After his resignation, the way for an interim government has been paved. Constitutionally the President is empowered to run the country without a cabinet.

Why has there been violence after the resignation?
Referring to the violence earlier this week, Gotabaya said what happened on May 9 was unfortunate. He said that the heinous acts of murders, assaults, intimidation, destruction of property and subsequent heinous acts cannot be justified at all. He said that the Inspector General of Police has been directed to conduct the investigation. He said that the Sri Lankan police and military forces have been ordered to strictly enforce the law against those who spread violence.
