IPL 2022, Future India Captain: The Indian Premier League’s motto is ‘Here Talent Meets Chance’ and the 2022 season lived up to this with some brilliant fast bowlers emerging as Hardik Pandya to stake claim as India’s potential captain.
Playing for Hyderabad in a full season for the first time, Umran Malik grabbed the attention of the world for his ability to bowl consistently at over 150 kmph. The Indian selectors were also impressed with him, while young left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan impressed with his new franchise Lucknow Super Giants’ impressive display of pace and precision bowling.
Apart from this, Mukesh Chaudhary and Simarjit Singh of Chennai Super Kings, Yash Dayal of Gujarat Titans and Kuldeep Sen of Rajasthan Royals were also among the Indian fast bowlers to make a mark in the world’s biggest T20 league. Some young batsmen have also shown that they are capable of playing at the top level. Among them was Tilak Verma of Mumbai Indians, who was also appreciated by his captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit described this left-handed batsman as a contender to play in the Indian team.
Former India batsman Virender Sehwag was very impressed with Punjab Kings wicketkeeper batsman Jitesh Sharma. His team failed to make it to the play-offs but he made full use of the opportunities. Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Verma impressed among the ‘uncapped’ (who have not played any international match) players who have played in the IPL in the past. Tripathi, however, missed out on a place in the Indian team.
From this season, Hardik Pandya has presented his claim as the future captain of India. Hardik’s fitness was in doubt before the start of the season but he shrugged off the critics by flaunting his leadership skills with brilliant performances with the ball and bat. Batting at the fourth order, he showed a great balance of defensive and offensive play as per the requirement of the team.
IPL has proved once again that age is just a number in this game. This season will be remembered for the strong performances of veteran Umesh Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha and Dinesh Karthik. Karthik made another comeback to the Indian team after a fine performance as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
While Umesh bowled brilliantly in the powerplay for KKR in the opening phase of the tournament, Saha gave the team a consistent start as an opener for champions Gujarat Titans in later matches. This season of IPL was also under the shadow of Corona virus but the BCCI successfully completed the 74-match tournament by controlling things properly. There were many cases of Kovid-19 in the team of Delhi Capitals, due to which the schedule of some matches had to be changed. This did not pose any threat to the tournament.
