First High Jump Medal in Commonwealth Games: Tejaswin Shankar won the first medal of athletics in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. He won the bronze medal by putting a high jump of 2.22 meters. This is India’s first medal in high jump in the history of Commonwealth Games. The most important thing here is that Tejaswin had reached Birmingham three days before the start of his event.
Actually, Tejaswin Shankar was not included in the Indian contingent announced for the Commonwealth Games 2022. This happened because he could not take part in the inter state test. Against this, he had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, where the decision came in his favor at the last moment and he was able to reach Birmingham just three days before the start of his event. Earlier, he had also seen the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on TV while staying at his home.
The story of Tejaswin Shankar coming into the high jump is also interesting. Actually, Tejaswin used to play cricket till the 8th. He also loved cricket and wanted to make a career in it. But seeing his height and physique, his physical education teacher suggested him to try himself in high jump. Tejaswin accepted this advice and shifted his focus from cricket to high jump. Following this teacher’s advice proved right for Tejaswin. Very soon he started winning medals one after the other in this sport.
Tejaswin won gold in high jump at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2015 at the age of just 16. After this, he was a silver medalist in the South Asian Games 2016. Tejaswin also set a national record in high jump in the year 2018. This year he jumped 2.29 meters high.
Tejaswin has also received a four-year athletics scholarship from Kansas State University, USA in the year 2017. He is studying business administration from the same university. Tejaswin is considered to be India’s big hope in the high jump. In the next Olympics too, the hope of a medal is tied to him.
