Although the price list of the Horticultural Producers Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society of Ltd. saw the price of tomatoes at Rs 75 on Tuesday, several vegetable shops and malls in Bengaluru crossed Rs 100 per kg. In Karnataka as well as neighboring states, tomato crops have been badly damaged by the cyclone. Due to this the prices are skyrocketing. Along with the cyclone, storm and rain have also damaged the crop.

Why are the prices of tomatoes rising?
According to experts, Kolar district of the state produces more tomatoes than other districts. At present, tomato crop is grown in 16,328 hectares in the state. The crop yields well in the months of June and August. The state produces 9.50 lakh metric tonnes of tomatoes every year. He said, “Last year 15 kg tomato was being sold in Kolar market for Rs 15. Now it has become Rs 80 and Rs 100. Wholesale price is between Rs 50 to Rs 70 in Shivamogga, Karwar, Hubli, Dharwad.”

Tomato prices doubled in the market
At present, three to four trucks of tomatoes are coming from Nashik to Bangalore market. People have turned to tamarind to get a tangy taste for sambar and other dishes. Due to incessant rains, many crops have suffered heavy losses, due to which the prices in the market have doubled.
