Condemnation Motion Against Russia in UNSC: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday (September 30) against the merger of four regions of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson with Russia. brought in the draft proposal. 15 countries were to vote on this resolution, including India. India remained neutral about it and distanced itself from voting. India has been neutral on resolutions against Russia on several occasions in the past. However, Russia did not allow it to be passed, using a veto against the resolution.
Four countries, including India, did not participate in the vote on the proposal brought by America and Albania. 10 countries voted in support of the resolution. In the resolution, Russia’s referendum in Ukraine has been described as illegal and it has been condemned. The resolution said that Russia should withdraw its forces from Ukraine with immediate effect. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday (September 29) that the occupation of parts of another country by use of threat or force is a violation of the UN Charter and the principles of international law.
In the referendum, so many people voted in favor of Russia
Russia-backed separatist leaders and officials held a five-day referendum from 23 to 27 September in four Ukraine’s regions – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. It was claimed that the people of these regions have supported to join Russia. Reports said that 98.4 percent of people in Luhansk, 99.2 percent in Donetsk, 93.1 percent in Zaporizhia and 87 percent in Kherson voted in favor of joining Russia in the referendum.
EU reaction to Russia’s move
The European Union has condemned Russia’s referendum and declared the annexation of Ukraine’s territories illegal. The leaders of the countries that join the European Union said that they would never recognize the territories annexed to Russia. The European Union has accused Russia of violating fundamental rights, freedoms, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin fiercely targeted Western countries with a program organized in the Kremlin on Friday. He said that Western countries want to make Russia a colony. Putin said that Russia is a great country and will not accept bogus international rules.
