1983 World Cup Win: Batting first in ODIs, hardly any team can think of winning the match after scoring just 183 runs. Then if you compete with a two-time world champion and a team full of more than one legendary players, then it becomes impossible. But exactly 39 years ago today i.e. on June 25, 1983, this historic incident happened in the world of cricket at Lord’s ground. Batting first, the Indian team was able to score only 183 runs, but it had bowled out the West Indies team adorned with star players for just 140 runs. The special thing is that this was not a bilateral series match, it was the World Cup 1983 Final match.

This was the third World Cup in the world of cricket. Both the World Cups held before this were won by the Windies team. For other teams in that era, beating the West Indies was like a dream. In the final of the 1983 World Cup, when this West Indies team was in front of India, in all the predictions, the Caribbean team was being told as the winner. When the Indian team was reduced to just 183 in the first innings of the match, then these predictions seemed to be coming true.

West Indies captain Clive Lloyd won the toss and elected to bowl first. At the very beginning of the match, India’s legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar returned to the pavilion for just 2 runs. Krishnamachari Srikkanth (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26) shared a 57-run partnership to save India from further damage in the beginning. Both the batsmen were already set that Srikanth was made lbw by Malcolm Marshall. Shortly after this, Amarnath also started walking. The Indian team, which lost three wickets for 90 runs, needed a good partnership here but the Windies bowlers did not allow any Indian batsman to stay on the pitch for long. Wickets kept falling one after the other and the entire Indian team was bundled out for 183 runs in 54.4 overs. Let us tell you that in that era, ODIs were of 60-60 overs.

Bowlers get historic win
Chasing the target of 184 runs, the Windies team also got the first blow for 5 runs. Balwinder Sandhu bowled Gordon Greenidge (1). After this, Desmond Hynes (13) and Vivian Richards (33) added 45 runs to rescue the Windies from the initial setback. Here Madanlal first took the wicket of Desmond and then made Richards walk as well. Windies team had lost 3 big wickets on 57 runs. From here the Indian bowlers did not give any chance to the Windies batsmen to return and kept taking wickets at regular intervals. By the time 140 runs came, the entire Windies team was piled up. For India, Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal took 3-3, Balwinder Sandhu 2 and Kapil Dev and Roger Binny took 1-1 wickets. Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’.
